I’m confident that our seventh year in Waunakee was our best year yet.  Not only did we luck out with weather, but thanks to each and every one of you, we were able to host another organized, safe, and FUN triathlon for 577 athletes!  We hope you enjoyed the new additions we incorporated this year to help create amazing moments for your child.  We’d love to hear any great stories you’d like to share about your race day experience, as well.

Here are a few that have come our way so far:

“My daughter just competed in the Waunakee Tri thanks to your scholarship program! She had an absolute blast and begged me to sign her up for another. Not only that but her soon to be three-year-old sister wanted IN too! Our whole family had a blast at your event in Waunakee. She was beaming with pride the entire day.”

“I just wanted to say how AMAZING the race was! I was looking forward to it for months and expecting to love it…. but had no idea just how much I would love it!

I’ve been talking about it all week and telling everyone I know how adorable it is to see, how fun for the kids, and how inspiring for adults watching. It was too darn cute, especially watching the tiniest kids come out of the pool. Not sure I’ve ever had so much fun at a race.

I just can’t say enough good things about the experience, and will continue to be gushing about it for weeks and months to come I’m sure. “

I witnessed an athlete in the swim area who stopped in the middle of her swim, nervous and wanting to stop.  With encouragement from her coach (she was part of our Exercise to Achievement program), she got the courage to start again and finish the swim.  I later witnessed this at the finish line:

Without that kind of perseverance and courage, she never would have experienced the joy of the finish line.  It was inspiring to me, and I was so proud of her!

Each race, we tally up the number of athletes from each participating school to help us divide out our race entry fees. Here’s how it shook out this year for our top five schools:

  1. Arboretum Elementary, Waunakee – 64 athletes!  They’ll earn our Fittest School trophy to add to their collection.

  2. Heritage Elementary, Waunakee – 50 athletes
  3. Waunakee Intermediate School – 39 athletes
  4. Mendota Elementary, Madison – 35 athletes
  5. Northside Elementary, Middleton – 34 athletes

We’d like to give a shout-out to our friends and partners in Waunakee:

  • The Waunakee Village Center, who goes above and beyond for us each year with their time and resources
  • The Waunakee School District, who allow us to use their wonderful facilities during the busy spring months
  • The Waunakee Rotary – who have supported this event financially and with volunteers since 2012. My daughter looks forward to seeing Mr. Phil hand her a finisher medal every year!

A few more thank-yous to our police and EMS staff, and the public works team for sweeping our course and transition area on Saturday morning!  We are always grateful to have such amazing first responders out there for our kids.

You can find your results online here, and remember to check out the special offers inside your virtual goody bag.  Remember, 100% of your entry fee goes back to fund health and wellness initiatives at your school because of the support of our amazing sponsors.

We know that there are always opportunities to improve, so we hope you’ll consider taking our event survey. Please share any fun stories or pictures with us via email (katie@tri4schools.org) or on our Facebook page.

Finally, we hope you’ll consider joining us on June 23rd in Sun Prairie and August 18th in Middleton for our other youth triathlons this summer!  Registration is open via our website, and volunteers are always needed, too!

From our staff, board, and race day leadership, we are honored that you choose to support us.  Thanks for allowing us to share in an important moment in your child’s life.

With gratitude,
Katie Hensel
