Hey followers, it’s your faithful leader here, Katie Hensel. I thought I’d jump in on the blog this week to let you know what I’ve been up to while our amazing interns have been manning the blog.
At first I thought I’d fill you in on the strategic planning we’ve been doing to set Tri 4 Schools up for success for the next three years, but let’s face it, if you’re reading our blog and have only a minute, is strategic planning something that’s going to interest you? Most likely not. So, I thought I’d share some of what I’m up to in my personal life (much more exciting…perhaps).
Honesty time: it’s been four years since I’ve done a triathlon. I know, I know, don’t you run a non-profit that gets kids into triathlon while singing the praises of multisport every day? Yes, I do. However, running a business and having a baby have been pretty time-consuming activities. Nonetheless, I don’t want it to be an excuse and become someone who says one thing but does another. So, here are three races I’m training for:
July 21st: Rock and Roll Half Marathon, Chicago – goal is a 1:50:00 time, which is about a 8:23 mile pace. My previous best time is 1:57:35, which I set at the same race is 2010. Training has been tough, as I’ve started to really work on speed training, and on many of my runs I feel wiped out and crummy at the end. But, as I’ve gone through these last eight weeks, I’ve started to reach my goals in each workout, and I feel like I’m beginning to trust my training. We’ll see how it goes!
July 28th: Tri-ing for Children’s Triathlon, Dousman, WI – I’m doing a sprint triathlon with a bunch of my family members. I’m pretty nervous for this one, since I’ve gotten very limited swims and bike rides in (the half marathon is the week before). However, having the balance of those workouts has been a nice break from my running training, and I think the experience of the triathlon on race day will be exhilarating and hopefully motivate me to do another one next summer (maybe an Olympic distance).
Feburary 2nd, 2014: Miami Marathon: Yes, it’s time to party (or run 26.2 miles) in the city where the heat is on! The training for this race starts in October, so I’ll be training during the time we’re ramping up for the Fall Mud Run. Not sure how that’s going to go, but it will again force me to balance my time with work and health. The last marathon I did was in 2009 (Chicago) and my goal time for this year is 3:50:00. Best of all? My husband is doing the half marathon and my sister is flying down to join us!
Wish me luck! In case you were wondering about the picture, I did a 5k at midnight in Eagle River, Wisconsin over the fourth of July with my niece, mom-in-law, and husband. This was our “game face” pose. It was awesome to run with my niece, she joined cross country this year as a sixth grader and kicked my butt at the end of the race! Way to go girl.
