Well, we somehow lucked out and ended up avoiding thunderstorms! Along with that incredible bonus, our sixth annual triathlon was a smashing success once again.
If you remember our first triathlon ever back in 2011, we had a one hour thunderstorm delay, which gave way to bright and sunny skies (and some serious sunburns). We were extremely fortunate this time around to be prepared and set expectations and a weather plan early. I always feel that over communicating is the best policy, and our parents were amazing by being flexible and patient as we dealt with the weather situation this year. Thankfully, we only had a 10 minute rain delay before our short course, meaning that all 530 athletes had a chance to complete the entire triathlon!
This year, we had a few changes that I think really helped make this event even better. We switched the direction of our bike course, increased signage on the bike loop for our long course, and removed the steep hill and busy intersection to make the course even safer. That said, there are always things we can improve, and if you have any ideas or suggestions, please comment below or email us at contact@tri4schools.org.
Finally, we want to congratulate our Fittest School for the 2016 Middleton Triathlon (for the second time this year)…ELM LAWN ELEMENTARY! With 42 kids participating, they will earn a trophy for their efforts. We had students from 100 different schools participate in this event, and raised just under $15,000 for school health and fitness programs.
This absolutely wouldn’t be possible without the support of our presenting sponsor, Harbor Athletic Club, and our other sponsors as well. They make it possible for us to give back 100% of our entry fees, and deserve our support and patronage. We also need to give a shout-out to our amazing volunteers – you stuck it out in the rain and made sure that our kids were well-cared for and encouraged!
We hope to see you at one of our two remaining events this fall – the Family Mud Run in Verona on September 24th, or the Dreambank Haunted Hustle kids run on October 29th.
Stay active, stay healthy!
