Hello Tri 4 Schools friends! My name is Lexi, and I am one of the new Tri 4 Schools interns. Let me start by introducing myself and by saying how excited I am to be a part of Tri 4 Schools this spring! I just graduated from UW-Madison this past semester with a double major in Biology and Spanish. Originally from Eau Claire, WI, I am a true Wisconsin girl at heart who really loves cheese and the Badgers! Some of my fondest memories of my college career include going to Badger games, especially taking the trips to Indianapolis for both Big 10 football championships, the Rose Bowl in 2013, and getting to sit front row at a basketball game versus Ohio State. When I’m not cheering on my Badgers (or Packers, or Brewers), I enjoy spending my free time with friends, family, and my two wonderful dogs, reading, cooking, and being active, of course! During college my favorite ways to stay active were taking fitness classes and participating in Intramural Sports. To stay active now that I have graduated, one thing I can’t wait to do more once the negative temperatures of winter pass is hiking.
While working at the Division of Recreational Sports at UW the past couple of years, I was fortunate enough to help plan a new community outreach program geared towards getting elementary kids active by hosting a fun day for them to come and play games at the UW- Natatorium with enthusiastic college kids. My involvement with this program, Day of Play, is one of my favorite fitness-related memories (Bucky Badger even came to play, too!), and it is also one of the reasons I became so interested in the Tri 4 Schools organization and their mission to end childhood obesity in Dane County. I am very exited to be a part of an organization that gives back to the community, because throughout my college career I have enjoyed volunteering throughout the Madison community, especially working with kids in various after school programs. I truly was so excited to learn how Tri 4 Schools gives back to some of these very same schools and kids, and I knew it was an organization that I definitely wanted to be a part of!
Every time I meet with Katie, I learn something new and awesome about Tri 4 Schools, and I am sure I will learn so much more this spring and gain valuable experience from this internship that I will carry with me while working towards my future goals of grad school and a career in Public Health. I cannot wait to help make 2014 a great year for Tri 4 Schools and see how this rewarding work benefits the youth of Dane County!
