Hello Everyone! My name is Ellie Nelson, and I am the second of the two new interns for Tri 4 Schools this semester. I am so excited to be given the opportunity to intern for Katie, and I look forward to a fun and educational semester! Let me first start out with sharing with you a bit about myself.

I am originally from Sherwood, WI, which is a small town on the outskirts of the Appleton area. Growing up, I spent most of my time outdoors—hiking, biking around town, swimming in the lake, playing with the neighborhood kids. These hobbies have followed me into adult life, where I still enjoy any form of outdoor recreation, along with cooking, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.  I recently spent a semester in South Africa, and while there, hiked through one of its mountain ranges.  It was a lot more physical work than I was expecting but a lot of fun! It is probably one of my favorite fitness-related memories.

I am a senior at UW Madison, pursuing a degree in Nutritional Sciences. I am extremely interested in the public health aspect of nutrition and physical education, so when I learned about Tri 4 Schools, I knew this was the perfect organization for me to get involved with. With my own childhood in Sherwood in mind, I think Tri 4 Schools’ mission to get kids active will not only promote health and fight childhood obesity, but also increase happiness of the youth of Dane County.

Tri 4 Schools is an awesome organization, and I know I will learn so much about health promotion and education, along with the “behind the scenes” of non-profit work. Katie has been an excellent mentor so far, and I cannot wait to work with her in the upcoming months! I am hoping this internship will help give me the tools I need to build a future career in health education and promotion at a community-based level.

I’m looking forward to an exciting semester ahead with Tri 4 Schools!
