Summertime means we are once again able to work with some of the best and brightest students on campus. Meet Erin Wagner, one of our summer interns!
Hello Tri 4 Schools Community! My name is Erin Wagner and I will be one of the interns working with Tri 4 Schools this summer! I will be actively involved in the school training programs, event day volunteering, and fundraising initiatives. I am ecstatic to work with this wonderful organization and I look forward to meeting many of you this summer. Without further ado, here is a little background about myself.
I just completed my junior year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I study exercise and movement science in the Kinesiology program. In addition to my degree, I am on pace to receive a Certificate in Leadership when I graduate in the spring of 2018. I hope to use the knowledge from my program to work in intercollegiate athletics, either as a coach or administrator in student-athlete development. I aspire to work with the next generation of athletes to achieve their full potential in the classroom and on the field. On top of my responsibilities as a student, I also compete for the Badgers on the cross country and track and field teams. I race distances ranging from the mile to the 6k, but my favorite event is the 3,000-meter steeplechase. This past track season I competed at the Big Ten Championships where I placed 9th and set a new personal record!
Reflecting on my career in athletics, I am very thankful for the opportunities I had to participate in sports as a kid. When I was in grade school and middle school, I participated in figure skating, travel soccer, basketball, and cross country (shout out to my parents for providing transportation! ). Even though I decided to focus my attention on running in high school, I always loved playing multiple sports and I believe that it made me a more versatile athlete today. When I volunteered at the Sun Prairie Tri 4 Schools triathlon last summer, I was absolutely amazed at all of the kids who competed. I couldn’t believe the talent the kids had across all three endurance disciplines. They all demonstrated drive, commitment to their friends and teammates, and had fun the whole way. If Tri 4 Schools existed in my hometown in Illinois back then, I know I would have jumped at the opportunity to participate!
As I’ve grown in athletics, I have learned important skills in effective teamwork, leadership, and communication. Running has allowed me to establish healthy habits, connected me with some of my closest friends, and provided me with an outlet where I can channel my energy. Tri 4 Schools also holds these values by providing outstanding events and programs to kids in the greater-Madison area. This way, kids create healthy habits of their own, build good character, and have fun through physical fitness. I admire their outreach and philanthropy in the Madison school districts, and I am excited to work with such a community-focused non-profit. As a summer intern, I look forward to working with your kids in their training groups and behind the scenes in our event and fundraising planning. Look for me at the Sun Prairie and Middleton triathlons, the golf outing, and helping out with the training groups!
